Tent Safety

Tents larger than 10 ft. x 10 ft. in the City of Evanston require a permit and must be inspected and approved by Northwestern Environmental Health and Safety and the Evanston Fire Department for code compliance. After approval, organizers are expected to follow the guidelines below throughout the event.

Tent safety guidelines for event organizers

  • Adhere to the Tent Inspection Checklist and conduct pre- and post-event inspections.
  • Monitor weather conditions and have a wind-action plan for high winds, lightning, or storms.
  • Do not exceed tent occupancy limits. Keep aisles (minimum 36 inches), exits, and exit paths clear.
  • Keep floors and walkways free of trip hazards. Use cable covers where cords cross pedestrian areas.
  • Smoking, vaping, open flames, pyrotechnics, and sparking devices are prohibited in tents and within 25 feet of tents.
  • Keep fire extinguishers, exit signs, and other emergency equipment accessible and unobstructed.
  • Do not modify tents, including panels, stakes, straps, or structural components, or add cooking, heating, generator, or other equipment without prior approval.
  • Regularly inspect for loose stakes, damaged supports, frayed ropes, or sagging fabric, especially after severe weather. Report concerns to the tent vendor promptly.
  • Turn off heat sources and disconnect non-essential electrical equipment when not in use or overnight.
