Clinical Services Overview

Below are some of the services that CAPS offers to current Northwestern students.

Emergency/Crisis Support

If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to your local emergency room.

For Daytime Emergency Services, call 847-491-2151, and let us know that you need to speak to someone immediately, and we will connect you with an on-call counselor.

For After-hours Emergencies, please call 847-491-2151 and follow the prompts (press 0) to be connected to an on-call counselor. An emergency counselor is available 24 hours a day, year-round.

For more information on our crisis support services, visit our Crisis Support page.

Getting Started at CAPS

The easiest way to get started at CAPS is to come in during our Same Day Access hours, but students can also schedule an initial assessment. See here for more information on getting started at CAPS. Hours and location information can be found here.

Individual Therapy

CAPS offers personalized individualized therapy sessions with a CAPS counselor. CAPS services are based on a short-term model and the frequency of these meetings varies based on the student’s need and availability. For more information, visit our Brief Individual Psychotherapy page.

Group Therapy

CAPS offers a few groups every quarter where students have the opportunity to connect with other students in a safe, confidential, and supportive space. To learn more about group therapy, visit our Group Therapy page.

CAPS also offers virtual workshops and gathering spaces, such as Coffee Talk for International Students and Sana Sana. For more information, visit our Virtual Workshops and Gathering Spaces page.

Psychiatric Services

CAPS offers psychiatric services such as psychological evaluations and medication management. Please note that CAPS Psychiatrists will only offer medication management to students who are also in therapy with a CAPS clinician. For more information, visit our Psychiatric Services page.

Referral Support

CAPS provides students assistance in connecting to therapists, psychiatrists, and other providers in the Evanston and Chicago areas. Our client care coordinators can also assist students in understanding their insurance coverage. For more information, visit our Referral Support page.
