AWSM is NU’s Home for Women in Sports

Northwestern’s chapter of the Association of Women in Sports Media regularly hosts speaker events for students to learn from women in the industry. The group also hosts regular meetings, allowing members to discuss the industry and give and receive advice about the sports media world.

Opening Celebration: Half & Half

The Block Museum of Art and Northwestern's Department of Art Theory and Practice celebrate the opening of 2024 MFA thesis exhibition, "Half & Half." Come experience the work of artists: Maximiliano Cervantes, Tarik Dobbs, Morisha Moodley, and Jonathan Rosemond. Reception in the lobby of the Block Museum.


"Evil Eyes Sea" Book Talk with Özge Samancı

Join us for a Buffett Book Talk with Özge Samancı, author of the new graphic novel Evil Eyes Sea, a feminist political mystery set in Istanbul during the 1995 elections. It tells the story of two broke students who witnessed an unusual death on a scuba expedition.


NU Nights: Picnic in the Park

May 3, 5:00-7:00 PM - Centennial Park

The nice weather is finally here! Celebrate with NU Nights this Friday with a picnic and books. Bring a picnic blanket, an appetite, and a friend! Hindu YUVA + Seva Spring Fest

May 3, 4:00-6:00 PM

Hindu YUVA + Seva are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Spring Fest to celebrate Hindu/Sikh New Year! We will have various stalls with fun traditional activities like kite flying, henna, rangoli making, and a traditional wear photo booth. We will also have Indian snacks! The event is free and open to all. We hope to see you there and please bring your friends and family!

Dittmar Gallery in Norris Through 5/7 – University Library Through 6/14

Artist Bradley McCallum uses Foley’s video footage from the civil wars in Libya and Syria to create oil paintings that he further activates with augmented reality, allowing viewers to experience Foley’s presence, and the footage that inspired the paintings.


The 93rd Annual Waa-Mu Show: TAKEN AWAY, A Musical Trilogy

Through May 5

The 93rd Annual Waa-Mu show, Taken Away: A Musical Trilogy, is a unique presentation of three original short-form musicals, connected by the theme of loss and the poignant exploration of something being taken away.


Seminar: Poverty and Her Daughters

May 7, 6:15-7:45 PM

Poverty and Her Daughters will explore the themes of poverty and education, poverty and violence, poverty and homelessness, and poverty and health outcomes/disabilities. Through a variety of lecture and conversation, participants will deepen their understanding of these themes and have an opportunity to learn about Catholic organizations that are addressing these issues today. The seminar takes place over four Tuesdays, starting May 7th from 6:15-7:45 p.m. CST (May 7, 14, 21, 28).


The Twilight of Democracy: Buffett Lecture with Anne Applebaum

May 8 - 5:00-6:30 PM - Lutkin Memorial Hall, 700 University Place

Join us for a Buffett Lecture by Anne Applebaum, Pulitzer Prize winning historian, journalist and commentator on geopolitics, on "The Twilight of Democracy." She'll examine the challenges and opportunities of global political and economic change through historical and contemporary lenses. Informed by her expertise in Europe and her years of international reporting, she'll share perspectives on, and the far-reaching implications of, today’s volatile world events. Medill Professor Peter Slevin will moderate the discussion.


PARTica Art Day

May 9, 11:00 AM-1:00 PM - South Lawn Norris

Join Artica Studios for a creative day in the sunshine! Artica’s largest annual event, PARTica offers a number of free art activities, from tie-dying, canvas painting, flower making, and more! Bandanas will be available for tie-dye. You are encouraged to bring a t-shirt of your own to dye!
In case of rain, join us in the Wildcat Room, Floor 1!


Sheil Spring Concert

May 10, 7:00-8:00 PM

Sheil music ministers will join with Sheil Bienen School of Music students to present a benefit concert of art songs, chamber music, and concerted liturgical music. Music includes Copland, Mozart, Franck, and others. The concert is free and open to the public; proceeds from a free-will offering will go to support student retreats in the 2024-2025 academic year.

SOAcon: A Leadership Transition Conference for Student Org Leaders

Aimed at empowering student leaders to excel during transition, SOAcon is a one-of-its-kind event that will set the standard for student leadership development. Don’t miss out on the chance to connect with like-minded individuals, gain invaluable insights, network with affinity groups, gather resources and vendor contacts, try tasty catering, elevate your leadership skills, and WIN PRIZES! The event will feature sessions about funding tips, cancel culture, leading with empathy, forming effective collaborations, and more.


Wirtz General Auditions

May 11 – 10:00 AM-6:00 PM

The Wirtz Center for the Performing Arts is holding general auditions for our Early Fall ‘24 shows. We hope that you consider auditioning for one or more of the many productions that will be happening at Northwestern this year! Auditions can be either in-person or virtual and are open to all students at Northwestern – (not just performance majors!)


Jumpstart Corps Member Applications Now Open

May 17

Jumpstart students spend 300 hours over the academic year teaching language, literacy, and social-emotional skills at local preschools. Eligible Federal Work-Study students earn $14 per hour, and all students receive $1,290 to use towards tuition or student loans after 300 hours.

Students gain classroom experience and training in education and emotional development, build relationships with children and teachers at local partner schools, and develop leadership and teamwork skills to prepare them for future careers.

Do you love kids? Want to be better connected to your Evanston neighbors? Interested in issues of education equity? You are invited to apply to work for Books and Breakfast, a morning before-school program supporting Evanston kids and addressing historic inequities in the school system.

2024 Wildcat Excellence Gratitude Celebration

Tuesday, May 28 from 6:00-8:00 PM - Louis Room, Norris

The Wildcat Excellence Gratitude Celebration is an annual celebration event that recognizes and honors the outstanding leadership of our students, staff, faculty, student organizations, and their advisors. The end-of-year event is open to the entire Northwestern community and recognizes and extends gratitude for how NU members support and care for one another, lead with justice and equity at the center, and serve NU and the local Evanston and Chicago communities.


 

 Red Watch Band Alcohol Bystander Intervention Trainings

Have you ever had to help a drunk friend but weren’t sure exactly what you were doing? Attend a Red Watch Band bystander intervention training this spring quarter to learn more. The training will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and intervene effectively in an alcohol-related medical emergency. You’ll learn about how to prevent and/or respond to an alcohol emergency; and the truth behind common alcohol-related myths.


Drop-In Peer Tutoring
Come see the ASLA Peer Tutors for help with variety of courses! You can find them Sunday through Thursday at Schapiro Hall, Shepard Hall, Elder Lounge, the Multicultural Center, and the GSRC.

Subjects covered include biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, economics, engineering analysis, math, physics, and statistics.
Student Affairs Marketing Needs Photographers & Videographers for Fall 2024

SAM is looking for talented and dependable photographers, videographers, as well as photo/video editors. (or any combination of those) for Fall Quarter 2024. Ideally we would like to get you familiar with the team and your role this quarter. Candidates MUST have a portfolio for review. Work-Study is strongly preferred.
