Dear colleagues,
We are all feeling the strain of uncertainty as the University faces unprecedented actions by the federal government. To address the various complicated issues before us, we are continuing to work on multiple fronts, including with other universities and in Washington, D.C. Northwestern also recently announced our plan to enable the continuation of vital research that is subject to stop-work orders or the federal funding freeze.
Another part of our strategy to protect the future of our institution is to inform lawmakers and the general public about the ways Northwestern research improves lives every day. To help us do this, we recently launched a website that highlights examples of our impactful research and facts about our overall research enterprise.
This resource was developed by the Office of Global Marketing and Communications in close collaboration with the Office for Research and is meant to be shared widely — with those who have questions about what federally funded research means, for those who want to advocate on behalf of Northwestern, and for those who simply want to learn more about the phenomenal work our faculty, students and scholars produce.
Many of you have platforms where you can share this link, and I encourage you to use this information to help answer questions from people in your networks who may not fully understand the impact Northwestern and other institutions of higher education have on our world.
We must find ways to collectively correct the narrative about higher education. Sharing our positive impact far and wide is one way to do this, and I hope you find the new website helpful.
As always, thank you for all you do for our students, for Northwestern and for the betterment of society.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hagerty Provost First Chicago Professor of Finance |

Attend an open forum on accreditation
As part of its 10-year accreditation review, Northwestern will host Higher Learning Commission peer reviewers on campus next week. Faculty, students and staff are invited to meet with the review team during open forums. A list of the open forums, including their dates, times and locations, can be found on the April 28-29, 2025 Campus Visit website.
OER Grant awardees announced
Funded by the Office of the Provost and University Libraries, Open Educational Resources (OER) Faculty Grants are intended to fund the work involved in finding, creating, using and sharing open educational resources as replacements for required commercial textbooks. Eight faculty projects were awarded grants for the 2025-26 academic year. In addition to saving students thousands of dollars, completed OER texts give faculty the opportunity to provide customized course materials.
Block Cinema’s weekly research screenings
Block Cinema’s weekly research screenings create a space for discovery and collaboration, offering Northwestern scholars rare access to long-unseen films sourced from archives and artist collections. These informal gatherings support both original programming and broader scholarship by uncovering, assessing and reintroducing overlooked cinematic works.

Register for TEACHx
On May 21-22, TEACHx will return to the Norris University Center to showcase innovative approaches to teaching and learning with technology. Headlining this year's conference is a keynote address by José Antonio Bowen called "Educating Humans to Thrive in an AI World" and a featured workshop by Judith Risch called "Why Digital Accessibility Matters Today." The two-day conference also will include workshops, presentations, lightning talks and the Canvas Hall of Fame ceremony. This year's conference explores a wide range of topics relevant to teaching and learning, including accessibility, artificial intelligence (AI) use cases and impacts, and student assessment and success. The event is free to anyone in the Northwestern community.
