A Handwritten Parchment of the Declaration Found
Danielle Allen and colleague Emily Sneff have discovered an early handwritten parchment of the Declaration in a provincial archive in Britain. This is the only other 18th-century handwritten parchment Declaration that is known to exist besides the 1776 Declaration, which is displayed in the National Archives in Washington. Scholars argue that the new parchment has the potential to shed light on the "key riddle" of the American system- Was the country founded by a unitary national people, or by a collection of states?

Danielle Allen's Our Declaration is chosen
Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality is Northwestern's One Book One Northwestern all-campus read for the 2017-18 academic year, and the author, Danielle Allen, will deliver a keynote on October 19th. Allen stresses that the book is particularly relevant today, and argues, "In times as turbulent as these, it’s a valuable anchor for all who desire to secure the health of our democracy".

New Northwestern Students Heading Over to Hamilton
First-year Northwestern students are being given the opportunity to watch the Chicago Broadway production of Hamilton: An American Musical this October. The musical tells the story of the life of founding father Alexander Hamilton through hip-hop music. Hamilton also sheds light on the issues raised in this year's book, Our Declaration.
