Mental Health Advocate: Rebecca Abara

“I’m first-generation American. My mom emigrated from Nigeria and has been a single parent for as long as I can remember. She worked multiple minimum-wage jobs to make ends meet.
“Northwestern has grounded me in the reality that nothing is impossible if you work for it. To know that I’ll be able to walk out of college and change my family’s fortunes gives me chills.”

Rebecca Abara, a QuestBridge Scholar from Dallas, earned campus awards for her Free Your Mind! mental health campaign, a series of events that included a panel discussion on social stigmas of mental health and an arts festival to encourage students to relax. She will join Procter & Gamble’s customer business development division in Philadelphia after graduation.
