Trumpeting His Success: Daniel Flores

“Mariachi music is emblematic of San Antonio and a strong part of my identity. I joined a group during high school, and when I came here I wanted to establish a collegiate ensemble to simultaneously enjoy and share mariachi music with my university.
Mariachi Northwestern helped launch the Mariachi Academy, a Chicago Mariachi Project program based at Benito Juarez High School in Pilsen. Most of the students come from households with parents who never attended college.”

Daniel Flores, who fled violence in Lima, Peru, with his family when he was 5, grew up in San Antonio. The QuestBridge Scholar plans to complete the new Kellogg School of Management master’s degree in management and one day establish a nonprofit that helps qualified low-income students apply to and thrive in higher education.

Mariachi Northwestern started when Daniel Flores wanted to make a mariachi birthday music video for his mom. See the full story.
