Elizabeth “Betsy” Brenner (J76, KSM78)

Elizabeth “Betsy” Brenner (“Making Headlines,” spring 2003), former publisher of the News Tribune in Tacoma, was named president and publisher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in November 2004. With experience in reporting for the Chicago Tribune and marketing for the New York Times, Brenner will lead the 241,000-circulation newspaper in attempting to overcome the industry’s tight budgets and declining readership.

Bernard Williams (G90)

The Evanston Art Center is displaying a new work by artist Bernard Williams (“Portrait of the Artists,” summer 2001) through spring 2006 as part of its 2005–06 Sculpture on the Grounds program. The installation, a collection of intersecting multilayered symbols from African, Asian, Caribbean and Latin sources entitled Cultural Cargo, is Williams’ largest three-dimensional endeavor. Williams teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his work has been featured in museums across the country.

Jason Moore (C93)

DreamWorks recently selected Avenue Q director Jason Moore (“Purple Prime Time,” spring 2004, and “From Sesame Street to Broadway,” winter 2004) to direct a new Broadway musical based on the animated film Shrek. The director will also remount the Broadway hit Avenue Q for a theater in Las Vegas and produce a television series based on the puppet play. Moore also has plans to revive Steel Magnolias for Broadway this spring and direct a new television version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Kevin Heisinger (SESP98)

Kevin’s Law, a bill that allows judges to order outpatient treatment for people with severe untreated mental illnesses and a history of violence, recent hospitalization or incarceration, took effect in Michigan in March 2005. The law came as a response to the August 2000 killing of 24-year-old Kevin Heisinger (Deaths, winter 2000), who was beaten to death in a Kalamazoo bus station by a man with untreated paranoid schizophrenia. Heisinger is remembered for his commitment to community service and his willingness to help anyone in need.
