Alumni and friends attending the May 23 performance by four School of Music students at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts’ Terrace Theater in Washington, D.C., weren’t the only ones giving students rave reviews. The Washington Post praised cellist Anna Burden, a senior from Lake Bluff, Ill., trumpeter Ethan Bensdorf, a junior from Evanston, marimba player Owen Clayton Condon (GMu03), a doctoral student from Louisville, and pianist Winston Choi, a doctoral student from Toronto, in its May 25 article “Northwestern’s A-Plus Recital.” The students appeared as part of the Kennedy Center’s Conservatory Project, a program that showcases top new talent from the country’s leading music schools. Following the recital, alumni mingled with School of Music Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery and the student performers at a Northwestern Alumni Association champagne reception that raised more than $2,300 for School of Music scholarships. Tickets are still available for another NAA event with the School of Music — A Night with Northwestern at San Francisco Opera: Doctor Atomic performance, featuring composer John Adams, the inaugural winner of Northwestern’s Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Musical Composition.
