NU Club of Chicago members enjoy a pregame party before a trip to Wrigley Field in May

The NU Club of Chicago’s summer calendar included a July trip to Grant Park to watch the classic movie Annie Hall under the stars, an evening at Millennium Park for a performance by the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus on Aug. 17 and an August night at the Steppenwolf Theatre for the production of The Pain and the Itch, written by Bruce Norris (C82) and directed by Anna D. Shapiro, associate professor of theater and director of the School of Communication’s Master of Fine Arts in Directing Program.

Club members looking for volunteer opportunities can get involved with the NU Club of Chicago’s joint effort with the Campus Kitchens at Northwestern to lead weekly college and job preparedness training sessions for Evanston high school students. For more information, contact Mayank Gupta (McC99) at mayankgupta2@yahoo.com.

In April the NU Club of Philadelphia hosted a Dalí Weekend that drew alumni from as far away as Illinois and Nebraska. It included a private guided tour of the Dalí exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. David Robertson, director of the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, presented “Dalí in the Context of Three Themes” at a brunch following the tour.

During the summer, club members took in a Chicago Cubs vs. Philadelphia Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park and held a party for incoming students. On Sept. 9 members will enjoy an evening of zydeco music with other Big Ten Conference alumni at the Chaddsford Winery in Chadds Ford, Pa.

Opera fans can join members of the NU Club of the San Francisco Bay Area on Oct. 14 for the Northwestern Alumni Association’s A Night With Northwestern at San Francisco Opera: Doctor Atomic performance. The opera, in its world premiere run, is composed by John Adams, inaugural winner of the School of Music’s Michael Ludwig Nemmers Prize in Musical Composition, and portrays the drama that preceded the test explosion of the first atomic bomb. Prior to the performance, School of Music Dean Toni-Marie Montgomery, San Francisco Opera Association president Karl Mills (KSM84) and Adams will attend an alumni reception.

Members of the NU Club of Coachella Valley will be cheering on the Wildcat football team from the Beer Hunter Sports Pub and Grill on game days, and they’ll be traveling to Tempe, Ariz., for Northwestern’s Sept. 17 battle against the Arizona State Sun Devils. During the club’s new student party at the Palm Desert home of Jodie Miller (Mu58) in August, members awarded scholarships to first-year students Andrew Price of Palm Desert High School and Vanessa Valenzuela of La Quinta High School. On Jan. 13, 2006, members will join alumni from the University of Illinois at the Indian Wells Country Club for dinner and a presentation by Morris Beschloss, a Desert Sun columnist and nationally recognized expert in geopolitical and economic affairs.
