Fall 2021 Housing Selection Overview

Thank you for choosing to live in on-campus housing at Northwestern University for the 2021-2022 academic year. We are proud to provide a variety of living options and experiences. Please review the information below and then select the New Student (incoming first-year or transfer) or Returning Student (currently living on campus) links to get started.

Residential Services offers two housing models: residence halls and residential colleges. Each provides a unique opportunity for engagement and growth. Regardless of housing model, all students share in a universal residential experience by living in a residential area that includes common services, amenities, programming, staff, and Faculty-in-Residence. Check out our undergraduate housing page for an overview of areas and housing models.

All Gender Housing

All Gender Housing allows students, regardless of sex, gender, or gender identity, to share a room or suite. You will be able to select All Gender Housing as a preference in the housing contracting process.

Please visit our Room Rates page to view current rates.

Incoming first-year and transfer students as well as rising second-year students may not cancel their housing contract due to the residency requirement. Rising third- and fourth-year students may cancel their contract. Rising third- and fourth-year students should take note of the cancellation fee schedule as well. Students will only be released from housing for the following reasons:

  1. academic dismissal
  2. disciplinary exclusion from the University
  3. marriage (a copy of the marriage certificate must be filed)
  4. induction into military service
  5. graduation
  6. health, upon written recommendation of the University Health Service.

A variety of conditions may necessitate a housing and/or meal plan accommodation. Every effort is made to accommodate students’ needs within our housing system and meal plan using the alternatives available.

Students wishing to request housing and/or meal plan accommodations must submit the Housing & Dining Accommodations Request through the Housing Portal. Through that process, students will upload documentation from a certified medical/mental health professional who has worked with the student. Decisions on accommodations are made in early June.

Students living in campus residences are required to have a meal plan as a condition of the housing contract. All incoming first-year students and second-year students will be assigned the Open Access meal plan. For more information about meal plans and dining on campus, please visit the Northwestern Dining website.
