Billing and Payment Basics
Learn more about who bears the financial responsibility for improvements and repairs. At Northwestern, charges are broken into two categories: departmental charges and building charges.
Building Charges
Building charges cover maintenance and repairs to a building's infrastructure, its exterior envelope and attached components. These repairs are necessary to keep the building operating efficiently and safely, and they come out of the maintenance and operating budgets established for each building.
Departmental Charges
Departmental charges are for maintenance and repairs of departmentally owned equipment and furniture, as well as all renovations requested within departmental spaces. They are the responsibility of the requesting department (and will require a valid chartstring).
