The Student HandbookThe Northwestern University Student Handbook describes the expectations for behavior and conduct in the Northwestern community and outlines the procedures to be followed when these expectations are not met.
The Student Handbook contains the most comprehensive collection of rules, regulations, and policies pertaining to students, and it should be read and consulted by all students at Northwestern.
Think of the Student Handbook as a road map. It contains the rules and procedures that will guide students while they live and grow in this community of scholars at Northwestern University.
To paraphrase Italian philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas (c. 1225–74), rules are an organized set of principles designed and written for the common good, put forth by those who care for the community (Summa Theologiae, I–II, q. 90, art. 4). While some will think of the booklet as a collection of rules, those rules are really the expectations for behavior that we have agreed upon as a community.
