Visiting Scholar Plan

  • All J-1 and B1/WB visiting scholars are required to have health insurance throughout the duration of the research appointment at Northwestern University, either through Gallagher Benefit Services (GBS) or an alternative insurer that meets or exceeds minimum requirements.
  • Effective January 1, 2023, the Northwestern University Visiting Scholar Plan (VSP) will be offered by Cigna StudyWell/Cigna Global Health Benefits and administered by Gallagher Benefit Services (GBS).
  • Participation in the Northwestern’s Visiting Scholar Plan (VSP) is mandatory unless visiting scholars are able to provide evidence of coverage that meets the University’s minimum requirements, and a waiver is filed and approved with Gallagher Benefit Services.
  • It is the responsibility of the host department to ensure visitors are adequately insured.
