Northwestern Office of the Provost

Staff Newsletter | September 2023

Dear colleagues,

Fall Quarter classes have begun, and the academic year is now fully underway. The ramp-up to this time is always rigorous, and I want to thank everyone for your contributions. We're off to a great start!

What better way to launch a year of learning and growth than by experiencing the power of art? The Block Museum will host an Office of the Provost all-staff reception Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to chat with museum curators, staff, and student ambassadors about the museum's current exhibitions and newly acquired works. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP and mark your calendars.

On Oct. 11, we will gather for our Fall Quarter Office of the Provost all-staff meeting in McCormick Auditorium in the Norris University Center. At this meeting, our colleagues at Northwestern Athletics will join us for a discussion about how academics and athletics work together at the University. Afterward, please stop by the Office of the Provost's inaugural Coffee With Colleagues gathering in the Lake Room (#203) on the second floor of Norris.

I look forward to seeing you at these events. And once again, thank you for your efforts every day.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor

All about the staff

Meet Diamond Jones

Diamond Jones, Education Program Manager in the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR), has been working at Northwestern for two years. She started as OUR's Outreach Coordinator, which she explains is a position often filled by recent Northwestern graduates who pursued research themselves (as Jones did — learn more about her research below!).

In her role, Jones advises and builds relationships with undergraduate students, while developing OUR's workshop programming.

Tell us about your undergraduate major and research.

I was a student in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Weinberg, and I did my research in Japanese horror video games. These games became popular on Western game-streaming platforms after being translated by fans (I actually grew up watching people play them on YouTube!). I studied different aspects of these games for years, which ultimately culminated in my honors thesis titled “Friends with a Girl Like Me.” My research centered on the vengeful-ghost archetype manifested as a young girl and how these games articulated girls’ bodies. The games used a dialectic of cuteness and horror as a pathway to agency and a depiction of girlhood.

What do you most enjoy about working at Northwestern?

I love the people! I've had the pleasure of being a part of the Northwestern community for the last six years. Initially, I thought going from student to staff would be tricky for me — using first names rather than defaulting to everyone being "professor." But working here has provided a fantastic opportunity to reflect on how my relationships with my mentors and advisors have adapted and grown even stronger.

What is an interesting fact about you that people may not know?

My family enjoyed buying me board games, which was a bit silly as I was an only child without many  playmates. When I played Monopoly (specifically, the version that came out in 2006, with the "Speed Die" that had special instructions etched on each side of the die), I would select my dolls as players, assign actions such "Buy," "Auction," and "Add Houses" to the different sides of the Speed Die, and play full games all by myself!

Brag about your teammates! We feature one staff member in each newsletter. Nominate someone by emailing the Office of the Provost and telling us, in a sentence or two, how your colleague contributes to Northwestern’s mission and why everyone in the Office of the Provost should get to know them.

Updating display names and pronouns

With the rollout of the University Systems Update a multi-phase project geared toward increasing access, resources and support for gender-expansive people staff can now provide their name and pronouns as they would like them to be displayed in University systems such as MyHR, Northwestern People Directory, and Microsoft 365. This initative was created within the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion (OIDI) and is a collaboration between Information Technology, Human Resources and the University Registrar. Along with previously recorded webinar sessions, OIDI has provided instructions on how to update your Display Name and Pronouns and a list of frequently asked questions.
