Northwestern Office of the Provost

Faculty Newsletter | June 2026

Dear faculty colleagues,

I often say I have the best job in the world, and the past several months have only strengthened my gratitude. Since sharing in October that I would step down as provost, I have heard from so many of you. I am humbled, touched and grateful for your support and for your dedicated service to Northwestern. We have accomplished many things together, and I am delighted to return to serving with you as a faculty member.

Northwestern is on the cusp of a new era, with a new president and a new provost coming in to guide the University forward. After having worked closely with Erik Luijten during the past few months, I am confident the Office of the Provost and the entire academic enterprise are positioned for success. I look forward to what lies ahead for this exceptional University!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost
First Chicago Professor of Finance

News and Notes

Supplementary reports issued for NTE Faculty Survey

During the 2024-25 academic year, the Office of the Provost, guided by a faculty committee, undertook a survey of non-tenure eligible (NTE) faculty at Northwestern. The preliminary report on the results was released in November 2025. This report included a commitment that further analyses would be conducted to understand the breakdown of responses based on certain groups of faculty. The supplementary reports, analyzing the results of the survey based on faculty rank and contract length, are now available (along with the preliminary report) on the Non-Tenure Eligible Faculty Survey page of the Office of the Provost website.

Programming from the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching

  • "Teaching Without AI When AI is Everywhere," a 90-minute in-person conversation, will take place Aug. 24 from 9:30-11 a.m. in the Louis Room at Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Dr., Evanston. The event will focus on practical, sustainable approaches to assessment. A goal for the session is to produce a set of concrete ideas that faculty can adapt for use in their own classrooms and can be shared after the session. In advance, faculty are encouraged to provide two forms of input: examples of assignments adjusted to clearly communicate when and why students are expected to complete work without AI; and questions and suggestions to help shape a useful and focused conversation. Register.
  • Registration is open for the three-day immersive Course Design Institute, which will take place Aug. 25-27, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Norris the first two days, with a remote session on the final day. Participants will leave with a Canvas-ready syllabus and practical strategies to support student learning and well-being. Reserve your seat.
