Travel & Hotels

Whether it be by plane, train, or car, there are numerous ways to get to both Chicago and Evanston. Visit the visitors' section of the Undergraduate Admissions page to view travel directions, which includes area maps, specific breakdowns of travel routes, and turn-by-turn directions.

Which airport should I fly into?

Chicago has two airports: O'Hare International and Midway. While O'Hare is located about a half hour outside of downtown Chicago (13 miles), Midway is near the Southwest Side of Chicago, and about a 50-minute drive from campus (30 miles). Which you decide to fly into may depend on your preferred airline and ticket costs.

What kind of public transportation is there in Evanston?

Chicago's Transit Authority (CTA) operates in Evanston, including bus service and the  Purple Line. Generally, it's also easy to catch a taxi. Visit Northwestern's visitors' page for more information on routes.

Parking on Campus

Parking is open and free to family members Friday, November 8 through Sunday, November 10 for any on-campus spot (except for handicapped and reserved spaces). The most accessible lots are the south campus garage (near Norris University Center) or the north campus garage. Parking is limited (and requires a fee) at Ryan Field on Saturday; families are encouraged to park on campus and take the game day shuttles (picking up along Sheridan Road) to the game and Family Weekend Tailgate.

Where's the best place to stay in Evanston?

Seven hotels are within walking distance from campus: The Hilton Orrington, Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn, Margarita European Inn, The Homestead, Stone Terrace Bed & Breakfast, and the Stone Porch By the Lake. Because they're so close to campus, these hotels book up early during Family Weekend and Wildcat Welcome, so make your reservations as soon as possible.

It's also possible to book a hotel in Chicago's loop, though it'll be about a 45-minute commute to and from campus via Chicago's elevated subway system, known as the El.

If you have a car you might consider staying at a hotel in Skokie, Ill., about a 20-minute drive from Evanston. The closest mall, Old Orchard, is also located in Skokie, as well as such stores as Office Max and Best Buy.
