Technology Use

Where do I start learning about Northwestern's information technology services?

Technology is an essential tool of student life, and access to the University’s IT resources and support begins the moment you activate your NetID. The Northwestern IT website is your best source for tech tools and how-to’s, including minimum computer hardware recommendations, support options, and instructions for installing computer virus protection—a task important enough to be on Purple Prep’s summer checklist.

IT Support Options

Does Northwestern have computer purchasing guidelines?
For those planning to purchase a computer/laptop* before arriving to Northwestern, Northwestern Information Technology has a few recommendations as you are out shopping.

*Financial support may be available for purchasing a laptop or required electronic technology if you have applied for aid; find information on the Student Enrichment Services website.

Does my academic school have specific computing requirements?

Students with majors in the Bienen School of Music, School of Communication, School of Education and Social Policy, and Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences should meet the Northwestern Information Technology guidelines listed above in “Hardware Recommendations.”
• Journalism Students: Review the Medill Information Technology website before purchasing hardware/software.
• Engineering Students: Northwestern IT guidelines are sufficient for hardware; however you will need to secure Matlab software before the fall.
