Why did you join NUSAC?
I’m very attracted to NUSAC’s focus on building and sustaining community engagement, developing professional opportunities, and spotlighting workplace concerns across the entirety of Northwestern. My role in the SPS Office of Distance Learning puts me in a unique position to interface with staff and faculty across multiple colleges and departments and the more I do it, the more I want to do it, and keep doing it. I want my fellow Northwestern staff members to enjoy more opportunities to engage with each other and spark the kind of mutual excitement that comes from partnership and collaboration. When we are working together on something we are proud of and in which we are fully empowered stakeholders, we can accomplish great things and cultivate an enduring appetite for more opportunities to realize the changes we want to see.
What is the most important thing your Northwestern staff colleagues should know about NUSAC?
It might seem obvious, but I’m still in awe of the fact that NUSAC is made up of staff across many units across Northwestern who volunteer to be in a room together on purpose to figure out how to set the priorities and plans that can be realistically executed to serve the well-being of staff.
What issue are you most passionate about related to improving the Northwestern University experience for staff?
There are many words that come to mind when people attempt to describe the tone of the present moment we’re living through, and “abundant” isn’t one often one of them. And that’s where I want to pull focus because Northwestern is an incredibly abundant institution that offers staff many resources that help navigate our short-, medium-, and long-term challenges, and healthcare is very much at the top of mind for each and every staff member. In the time of a major transition from one healthcare plan to another, WE are each other’s best resources for navigating this major transition, and I want to put myself on the side of empowering staff to access these resources as we move forward together.
What do you most enjoy about your work at Northwestern?
A requirement of my role as a Learning Designer is ensuring people know how and where to get the information they need, and I am always seeking solutions that leverage existing (read: abundant!) resources. I also get an enormous amount of satisfaction from building and sustaining productive working relationships in the context of course development teams of Faculty Subject Matter Experts, Instructional Technologists, and Program Leads on new, revised, and continuous improvements projects across SPS programs.
What is a little-known fun fact about you?
I am a connoisseur of gluten-free dining in Chicago (and I’ll make you a list!). My partner has celiac disease, and our desire to share delicious food together has led me to become the accidental celiac-safe foodie I am (but make no mistake: I adore gluten!).
