National Provider Identifier

Implemented: June 19, 2017

Overview

The National Provider Identifier, or NPI, is a new field added to the Personal Data Form and myHR and is required for faculty physician hires.  Due to a change in benefits processing for Feinberg faculty with clinical (NMG) appointments, the NPI is necessary to allow physicians to be identified in the Northwestern Memorial Hospital benefits system.

Details

The NPI is a unique 10-digit number assigned to each healthcare provider for consistent identification across the healthcare industry.  While physicians should know their NPI at time of hire, NPIs are publicly available and can be retrieved from the NPI Registry.

Administrators processing paperwork for faculty physicians must ensure that the NPI field is accurately completed; failure to do so may result in a processing delay or may prevent the employee from correctly enrolling in NMG benefits.  This field may be left blank for all other hires.

DATA LOOKUP: After paperwork is processed, the NPI may be found on an employee's Personal Data page.

QUERY: Users with the proper security access may query NPI data from the NW_NMG_TBL table in the myHR Reporting database.  Join this table to your query using a left outer join to avoid dropping data from your results.
