House Director

Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee the opening of the Chapter House prior to the beginning of each quarter or semester that shall begin during the term of contract and closing of the Chapter House after the end of each quarter.
  • Supervise other Chapter House employees and contractors, which includes the hiring, firing and discipline of all such individuals, including but not limited to housekeeping and kitchen staff. This supervisory responsibility includes the formulation, interpretation and implementation of management policies and operating practices as well as resolving any and all disputes raised by Chapter employees and contractors.
  • Work closely with the House Association President as a liaison for the chapter and ZTA Fraternity Housing Corporation. 
  • Plan and coordinate meal services, including the budget and purchases related to food service. 
  • Supervise the maintenance of the Chapter House and the grounds, including any employees and contractors. 
  • Complete any and all other usual and customary duties to a House Director position, including such duties that may be suggested for all House Directors of Northwestern University, and such other duties as may be agreed upon by the House Director and the Chapter with approval of the General Advisor. 

Requirements:

  • Ability to use judgement and discretion to manage the Chapter, House, and personnel operations consistent with the best interest of the Chapter.
  • Serve as a counselor and friend to all members and new members of the Chapter at all times. 
  • Serve as official hostess for the Chapter. 
  • Live in the Chapter House as a full-time resident and sleep overnight at the Chapter House each night unless given advance permission from the General Advisor or Province President. 

Compensation: 

  • Competitive pay in accordance of other Northwestern House Directors, in addition to experience.
  • The House Director will be entitled to participate in medical plans or programs which will be obtained by the Chapter through its affiliation with the National Zeta Tau Alpha Organization.
  • The Chapter will reimburse the House Director for reasonable travel, lodging and other miscellaneous expenses incurred on its behalf and directly related to the performance of her duties.

Beta Theta Pi, Rho Chapter at Northwestern University

House Director

Purpose: To work with the fraternity’s members and support network to promote a safe and positive chapter house living environment.                                                                  

Supervisor: The position reports to the fraternity alumni house corporation but has a “dotted line” relationship with the Director in the University Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and to the Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity Administrative Office.                                                                     

Term: The 2018-2019 University academic calendar year including fall, winter, and spring quarters.                                                                     

Compensation: A furnished private room on the first floor of the chapter house with a private bath. All utilities, including water, heat, and electricity are included. A meal plan at the chapter house (meals are not provided during academic breaks). TBD monetary stipend will be provided at the end of each quarter if all job responsibilities are met.                                         

Basic Job Responsibilities:                                                                                                                                          

  1. Attend meetings or phone calls as needed with the Director or Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and a representative from the alumni House Corporation.
  2. Uphold all University and Fraternity and Sorority Life policies.
  3. Act as a role model for fraternity members.
  4. Refrain from engaging in any inappropriate relationships with students.
  5. Be a visible presence in the chapter house, including eating at least one meal (Monday – Thursday) weekly with the members of the chapter at the house.
  6. Respond to and document in a timely manner any misconduct that may occur in the chapter house and provide support/guidance/expertise in responding to, and handling crises. Report any incidents to House Corporation, Chapter Advisors, and the Director or Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life immediately.
  7. Follow all University Housing policies and House Corporation house rules.
  8. Approximately 10-15 hours of official responsibilities or meetings per week.

                                                                                                                                               

Chapter Interaction and Programming:                                                                        

  1. Work with the chapter officers to promote a positive and safe living/learning environment and to foster a sense of community within the chapter house.        
  2. Work with the chapter officers and staff in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life to enforce all University and Fraternity and Sorority Life policies.
  3. Meet weekly with the chapter officers, including house manager, chapter president, and VP of Brotherhood.
  4. Meet with international Administrative Office staff and House Corporation members when they are visiting campus.
  5. Counsel students and respond to crises that may occur in the chapter house.
  6. Be visible to students and parents and at special chapter events when invited.
  7. Serve as a liaison between the chapter and the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life as required.
  8. Attend a minimum of three Chapter Meetings and three Executive Board Meetings per month.                                                                                                                                                         

Facilities Management:                                           

  1. Conduct a daily walk-through of the entire facility (common areas and floors) and address any concerns with the facility.
  2. Work with chapter officers, cleaning staff, and food service vendor to develop and enforce policies to maintain an attractive, clean, and safe chapter house.
  3. Assist the chapter’s Property Manager with member check-in/check-out processes, building or room access issues, third party property inspections, maintaining supply inventory, and follow up with University maintenance requests.                                                                                           
Qualifications:                                             
  1. Strong interpersonal skills.
  2. Willingness and ability to relate to undergraduate chapter members and foster a positive mentor/mentee relationship.
  3. Ability to formulate goals and implement strategies for achieving goals.   
  4. Willingness to adhere to basic ethical standards in work with undergraduate chapter members.
  5. Ability and willingness to confront and report violations of University and Fraternity and Sorority Life rules and regulations.    
  6. Willingness to participate in criminal and financial background checks to be conducted by Northwestern University.
