Evacuation guidelines for individuals with mobility impairments
Evacuation guidelines for individuals with mobility impairments
Overview
Campus buildings have fire detection and alarm systems that alert occupants to evacuate in an emergency. Many buildings, including residential buildings, also have sprinkler suppression systems that significantly minimize the spread of fire.
Upon alarm activation, individuals with mobility impairments may not be able to exit a building without help from others (e.g., emergency responders) since elevators should not be used.
Individuals with mobility impairments, whether temporary or permanent, are encouraged to take proactive measures to ensure their safety by creating a personal evacuation plan and adhering to the recommended emergency preparedness guidelines.
Preparation
If you may need assistance in an emergency, you are encouraged to inform those around you about your plan.
Become familiar with exit paths and evacuation assembly areas of buildings you frequent.
Consider acquiring an alerting device (e.g., whistle) to draw attention to yourself during an emergency. To request one, please contact accommodations@northwestern.edu.
Make it a habit to always have a means to quickly call for help (e.g., cell phone).
Identify areas of rescue assistance where you can wait for emergency responders if you are unable to exit.
Some buildings have these areas designated in stairwells with emergency call boxes and will be marked with signage.
If your building doesn’t have a designated area, identify a few options, such as an office or classroom with a door that you can quickly access, preferably with a window and telephone.
Review, update, and practice this plan regularly.
Procedures
Upon alarm activation, exit the building if you are able and proceed to the designated assembly area or other area away from the emergency.
If you are unable to exit:
Call 911 as soon as it’s safe to do so and provide as much information as possible about your location and situation. Follow their instructions.
Inform those around you of your situation and ask for help, if necessary.
Proceed to an area of rescue assistance, away from any hazards, and close the door.
Upon arrival, emergency responders will assess the situation and determine if your evacuation is necessary; aid rescuers by providing them with information about your needs and the best ways to assist you.
