Alejandro Magaña, Director
Alejandro Magaña is currently the Director of Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs. Originally from Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood, Alejandro earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and American Studies and a Master of Science in Public Service Management from DePaul University. Prior to joining Northwestern, Alejandro worked at DePaul University for eight years, where his primary role was to provide leadership and strategic direction for the Office of Mission and Values. Additionally, Alejandro delivered over 60 campus-wide programs annually, created and managed a highly competitive leadership program, served as a founding committee member of the Men of Color Initiative, assumed advisory roles for various student organizations, participated as a facilitator in the Discover Chicago first-year program, and was a member of the president’s diversity committee. In his spare time, Alejandro enjoys biking, playing and coaching soccer, and spending time with his wife and son.

Valerie Almendarez-Jiménez is the Graduate Assistant for Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs and a doctoral candidate in the Department of History. She is currently working on her dissertation, tentatively titled, "Crafting Mexican New Orleans: Cultural Diplomacy and New Ethnicities, 1840 - 1943," in which she examines the cultural diplomacy of Mexican artists and musicians in New Orleans. Originally from Los Angeles, Valerie holds a B.A. in Women’s Studies and Chicana/o Studies from UCLA. She also holds two Master’s degrees - one in American Studies from the University of Massachusetts and one in History from Northwestern. She has previous experience working as a Peer Mentor at UCLA’s Student Retention Center, and as an administrative assistant in Financial Aid (Pasadena City College) and Academic Support Services (University of Massachusetts). In her free time, Valeria enjoys playing roller derby with The Chicago Outfit, traveling, record collecting, and trying new vegan recipes.
Student StaffDaniel Flores
Daniel is a senior majoring in Statistics and Latino Studies with a minor in Business Institutions. He hails from San Antonio, TX and truly misses triple digit weather. Daniel is one of the founders of Mariachi Northwestern, a group that has brought a new sound and image to campus. He also currently serves as Questbridge Liaison and founder of 1st Gen, a student group dedicated to the advancement of first generation students at NU. When he's not interning with H/LSA, Daniel can be found working as a Northwestern tour guide, spreading happiness with the Happiness Club, teaching ESL classes at Centro Romero, or masicating with the Northwestern Oral Masticators (food club).
Zachary (Zach) Kisfalusi
Zach is a senior hailing from Northwest Indiana. The Griffith native came to Northwestern as an Earth and Planetary Science and Geography double major. His passion for journalism and sports led him to join the WNUR Sports Broadcasting team. Zach is very involved with the Hispanic/Latino community on campus, primarily as President of Omega Delta Phi Fraternity, Inc. Zach decided to become an H/LSA Intern to help shape the Latino community by planning events and collaborating with other departments across campus. After graduation, Zach plans to either become a research geologist who solves the world water crisis by tapping accessible groundwater, or become the host of a sports talk show.
