Whether you are a transitional job seeker, an experienced worker, a professional or retiree, our Northwestern University Temporary Staffing Center has a variety of positions that may be just what you are looking for, ranging from office assistant to financial assistant to executive assistant and more.  We provide temporary employment on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses and positions that are both short-term and long-term.

All applicants must apply for a specific temporary job and complete the online application process, provide three professional references, proof of education and certified credentials if the Northwestern University vendor is unable to do so. Some applicants or employees will be required to have an in person interview and test on required software and other relevant skills as dictated by the temporary role.  All applicants hired for a temporary position must successfully complete a criminal background check. All applicants must meet the qualifications to be considered eligible and part of the temporary pool for employment. Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act

As provided by the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, now known as the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, you are entitled to request and receive a copy of Northwestern University's Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. This Report includes statistics for the previous 3 years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Northwestern University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from campus. The Report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies on drug use, crime prevention, the reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters. You can obtain a copy of this Report by contacting the Northwestern University Police Department Deputy Chief at (847) 491-3256. The Report can also be accessed and printed from the University Police website at http://www.northwestern.edu/up/safety/annual-report/index.html.

  1. How do I apply for temporary employment at Northwestern University?

    Visit the Northwestern University job site to apply for employment. All employment applications must be submitted online through this site.

  2. Which campus am I applying for?

    You may state your campus preference, Evanston or Chicago, during your in-person interview.

  3. May I submit my application without applying for a specific position?

    Our application process requires that you apply for specific temporary positions when you submit your application. This ensures that your credentials are reviewed against appropriate openings based upon your interests.

  4. What types of positions are available to temporary employees?

    Most, but not all, of the temporary positions are administrative or financial in nature. We are always recruiting applicants with a minimum of two years administrative experience and strong PC skills.

  5. What happens after I submit my application and resume?

    After you have submitted your application you will receive an email confirming that your application has been received. An NU Temporary Staffing Center representative will contact you if your application meets the position qualifications. We are sorry, but due to the high volume of applicants we are unable to respond to every applicant for a temporary position.

  6. How soon may I expect to hear from you if you are interested in my application?

    We review applications on an ongoing basis. You can expect to hear from us within two weeks if we are interested in pursuing your application.

  8. How long may I work at Northwestern University as a temporary employee?

    A temporary (non-student) employee may not work more than 1000 hours in any twelve month period.

  9. May I search for regular employment at Northwestern while on a temporary assignment?

    Yes. We encourage you to actively search for regular employment at Northwestern while you are employed as a temporary. Please keep the lines of communication open with your supervisor and request time off in advance when you have an opportunity to interview.

  10. If hired, do I receive a Northwestern University identification card?

    You can receive a Part-time/Temporary Employee ID Card while you are a temporary employee at Northwestern.

    • Your supervisor/administrator must submit a Part-Time/Temporary Employee ID Form pdf to the WildCARD office. Forms can be mailed in or emailed directly from the PDF. Note: This form must be submitted; emails from supervisors will not be accepted.

    • The temporary employee should go to the WildCARD office with their employee ID number and a picture ID (driver's license, state ID, or a valid, unexpired passport) to obtain the card.

    • Cards are free for temporary employees, but the replacement for lost or stolen cards is $15 (or $25 for Indala contactless smartcards).

  11. Am I eligible for any employee benefits?

    Any employee may participate in the Voluntary Savings Plan PDF Document. As a temporary employee, you may be eligible for medical insurance if you meet specific criteria in accordance with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). If it is determined that you are eligible for coverage, you will be contacted by the Northwestern University HR Benefits department.

  12. Do I get paid for overtime hours worked?

    All overtime must be approved by your supervisor before it is worked. Any temporary employee who works more than forty hours per week will be paid at the rate of time and one-half for hours worked in excess of forty.

  13. May I park on campus?

    Yes, you may purchase a monthly parking pass for the Evanston campus. The Chicago campus has limited parking, therefore parking passes are not available to temporary staff.

  14. I work on both campuses. Is there a shuttle I can take?

    Unfortunately, the Intercampus Shuttle can only be used with a valid WildCARD. Your Part-time/Temporary Employee ID Card can be used to ride the Evanston Loop, Campus Loop, Ryan Field, and the Frostbite shuttles.
