The Querrey Simpson Institute for Translational Engineering for Advanced Medical Systems was created in 2025 to improve engagement between Querrey institute innovations and Northwestern patients. This center serves to accelerate the clinical validation, adoption, and launch of pioneering technologies at the intersections of engineering, science, and medicine at the ‘mid-scale.’ QSI-TEAMS fills the gap between clinicians and engineers through translation and upscaling. Taking the needs of clinicians and applying engineering innovation, QSI-TEAMS will prove the protocol design and prepare devices for commercialization and manufacturing upscaling.

QSI-TEAMS will strengthen the connection between engineering sciences and the medical enterprise by adding essential resources to the process of identifying clinical needs, performing scaled clinical studies of new technologies and refining engineering attributes to align with clinical workflows.

Some of the opportunities provided by QSI-TEAMS are the expansion of scope of clinical studies through improved engineering capacity and clinical support, enhancing the clinical interface through systematic discovery of needs and development of user-centric designs, enriching the student experience through exposure to professional engineering resources and clinical collaborations, and extending engagements with established companies to facilitate partnerships and provide additional routes to funding and commercialization.

QSI-TEAMS is located in the heart of the Chicago medical campus on the 11th floor of the new Simpson Querrey Biomedical Research Center (SQBRC). SQBRC is the largest dedicated biomedical research facility in the United States.
