Meet Clint Swanson
This month’s featured colleague is Clint Swanson, health information technician in the Student Immunization Compliance Office that recently became part of the Office of the Provost. Clint joined Northwestern in this role last October.
What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy helping people with meeting their entrance health requirements as mandated by Illinois state law and University policy. It’s confusing for people who have never had to deal with their immunizations or haven’t seen them in a long while. Most undergraduates have to ask their parents or guardians for their childhood immunizations. Graduates—especially older-aged students—have to collect their immunization records from many different sources, which can be difficult at times. All students who need it deserve a helping hand with explanations to guide them toward their completion of the requirements.
What is your proudest accomplishment at Northwestern?
I feel very proud every day here at Northwestern. The community push toward shared knowledge and advancement is almost palpable at times. This has pushed me to go beyond my basic duties and find new ways to assist students to achieve their requirements the easiest and fastest way possible. Even though I have a state mandate to follow, I want the students to feel like we are here to help them and ease their stress of completing what is required of them.
Can you share a personal fun fact about yourself?
In a past life of mine, I was an EMT for over a decade. My focus was pediatrics, which is difficult for most people to deal with, but it really developed and rounded me as a person. Making a emergency room visit for kiddos fun and exiting is a challenge, but so much fun was had in those times and hearing children laughing is chicken soup for the soul.
Brag about your teammates! We feature one staff member in each newsletter. Nominate someone by emailing the Office of the Provost and telling us, in a sentence or two, how your colleague contributes to Northwestern’s mission and why everyone in the Office of the Provost should get to know them.

Performance goals due Oct. 26
The first Performance Excellence deadline for 2022-23 is approaching. By Wednesday, Oct. 26, all staff must have goals entered in myHR Learn. Additional information and job aids to help staff (i) determine goals with their supervisor, (ii) enter/edit/delete goals in the system, and (iii) track goal progress can be found on the Human Resources website. As a reminder, the recommendation is to set two to four goals that follow the SIMple framework:
S = Specific or objective measurable I = Important or aligned with our unit goals M = Meaningful or motivating to you
As noted in our August newsletter, the Office of the Provost recently refreshed its strategic priorities, which are guided by the University's goals. Individual goal-setting provides ample opportunity for staff and supervisors, together with unit leaders, to consider how your work and your unit support and contribute to these commitments.
More on performance deadlines
In addition to the Oct. 26 target for submitting goals, the remaining deadlines for the 2022-23 performance year are:
- Jan. 25: Staff and supervisors have mid-year check-in
- May 24: Staff complete written self-review in myHR Learn
- June 14: Supervisors complete written review and assign rating in myHR Learn
- July 19: Supervisors conduct performance meetings, finalize written reviews, and release reviews and ratings in myHR Learn; staff finalize reviews
