Dear colleagues,
Over the past weeks, I have been reminded of the strength, commitment and talent of our academic community. I want to thank you for diligently teaching, conducting research and fulfilling your service to the University, even against a backdrop of uncertainty.
A recent bright spot for me was the Faculty Recognition Dinner that took place Feb. 17. Northwestern has tremendous faculty, and every year we honor those who have brought distinction to the University by earning important external recognition from societies and agencies around the world. At this event, it is a tradition for two faculty honorees to share their research with attendees.

This year, Dayne Swearer and Sera Young took a special approach: Moved by the complexity of this moment for all of us in higher education, they delivered a joint presentation that not only shed light on their impactful scholarly work, but also reminded us of the importance of upholding a spirit of community and demonstrating leadership. I couldn't be prouder of our faculty, now and always.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hagerty Provost First Chicago Professor of Finance |

Office of Fellowships call for student referrals
The Office of Fellowships depends on referrals as it advises Northwestern students about the wide range of external funding opportunities available to them. To recommend student candidates, email their name, a brief supporting note and whether you wish your nomination to remain anonymous to Elizabeth Lewis Pardoe, Director, Office of Fellowships.
Need some inspiration? Listen to your colleagues' takes on why they nominate:
"The most impressive students I come across in Chem 171 are often too modest to acknowledge their strengths. I'm all too aware of the nonlinear benefits of early recognitions in our prizes-beget-prizes world. Hopefully, my small vote of confidence gives my modest superstars the nudge to believe they are worthy." – Todd Gingrich, Assistant Professor of Chemistry
“I’ve seen the difference it makes to have the Office of Fellowships involved in advocating for our gifted and hard-working students. It can potentially change their lives. Take five minutes and write that email.” – Elizabeth Shakman Hurd, Professor and Chair, Religious Studies; Professor, Political Science; Director, International Studies Honors Program
