Responding to the Conflict in the Middle East
Dear members of the Northwestern community,
The military conflict in the Middle East continues to evolve since it began Saturday, affecting many members of our community and the operations of our campus in Doha, Qatar. We understand the fear and anxiety created by the violence and uncertainty of war, and we ask everyone on our campuses to keep our friends and colleagues who are affected by this conflict in your thoughts and in your hearts.
Northwestern leadership and support staff in Evanston are in around-the-clock contact with senior leaders from Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) to ensure coordination and alignment on decision-making. Informed by guidance from government authorities, the Qatar Foundation, and other partners, NU-Q is operating remotely through at least the end of this week.
NU-Q Dean Marwan Kraidy and his leadership team are communicating directly to the campus community to provide regular updates, guidance and support. They also are collaborating closely with other universities in Doha. We appreciate the resilience and care with which the NU-Q community has handled this complex situation.
Beyond the NU-Q campus, Northwestern has a small number of students and scholars in the region, and we are providing services and support.
Resources also are available to Northwestern community members on the Evanston and Chicago campuses. For students, the NUhelp website contains a comprehensive list of well-being resources. Faculty and staff can find mental health and other wellness resources through the Employee Assistance Program and the Faculty Wellness Program.
As we continue to navigate this situation together, please know that our priority will always be the safety and well-being of our community.
