  • Leading School Reform in the Fifth Ward
Northwestern researchers, with a $4.5M NSF grant, are working to advance racial equity, school reform, and STEM education in Evanston’s Fifth Ward. They are collaborating with District 65, community groups, and local Black families to ensure the new elementary school provides rigorous and culturally relevant STEM education.
  • Boosting Small Business
In 2022, Bryant Wallace and Clarence Weaver founded e-Local Marketplace (ELM) to connect large organizations with local businesses. Supported by Northwestern as their first client, ELM boosts small, minority, and veteran-owned businesses. A forum on December 10 will further connect buyers and sellers, expanding the platform and supporting the local economy.
  • Move-Out Program Encourages Reuse
sustainNU’s Take It or Leave It program encourages Northwestern students to donate unwanted clothes and linens during move-out, reducing waste and supporting local charities. In 2024, over 8,000 pounds were donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Chicago. Celebrating 30 years, the program involves collaboration across University teams, with students eagerly participating.
  •  Staff profile: Jason McKean
Jason McKean, assistant dean and director of strategy and operations for Northwestern's Dean of Students Office, has dedicated 25 years to supporting students. Since joining Northwestern in 2015, he’s focused on off-campus life, the Administrator on Call program, and database management. A former teacher with degrees in education, Jason enjoys connecting with the community and spending time with his family at Evanston favorites like Lighthouse Beach and SPACE.
