Community Assistants

Community Assistants are upperclass students (sophomore, junior, senior) or graduate students who are responsible for approximately 40 students in their residential area. Each CA receives room and board compensation for their service. CAs play in integral role in the residential community. CAs are responsible for getting to know residents; helping all residents get to know one another; and supporting hall government activities. CAs encourage social responsibility and healthy living by fostering awareness of University policies, procedures, and resources. CA promote safety and security by responding to emergency situations and confronting and documenting violations of university policy. CAs engage and educate resident by providing support, encouragement, and referral to University services.

CA Supervision. Each CA is supervised by one of seven Area Coordinators (ACs) who are full-time professional staff members that live and work in the residence halls. Two ACs are assisted by Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) who are undergraduate or graduate students who live and work in the halls. RHCs supervise the CAs at:

  • 1835 Hinman and Jones Residential College;
  • Shepard Residential College and Public Affairs Residential College (PARC); and
  • the International Residential College (ISRC) and Communications Residential College (CRC).

CA on Duty. In each residential area there is at least one CA on duty from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Residents should check the staff duty boards located in the main lobby of the building and near each CA's room door to learn which staff member is on duty on a particular evening. CA duty staff walk through their residential communities several times a night and are available by cell phone when they are not in their rooms.

Resident Evaluations of CAs. At the end of each fall quarter, Residential Life asks each resident to complete an online evaluation of his/her CA. Residents evaluate the CA in a number of areas including community development efforts, outreach to residents, policy education, availability and more. The results of the evaluations are shared with the CA through his/her supervisor.

If you ever have compliments or concerns regarding your CA's performance, you may e-mail your Area Coordinator or stop by his/her office to share your perspective.
