How the Mailrooms Work
1. Mail and packages arrive at the mailroom. The time of deliveries varies, so please be patient as the mail clerks are working as fast as possible.
- USPS, UPS, FedEx, and Airborne Express know to deliver packages for students to their respective mailrooms.
- Only mail clerks should sign for deliveries. Please do not sign for any packages other than your own.
- For early morning deliveries when the mailroom is not open, carriers may call individual student rooms to deliver packages directly to them.
- If a signature waiver is filed for USPS Express mail, the postal carrier can leave the package in the locked mailroom and it will be logged in when the mailroom opens. Otherwise, the carrier will usually bring it back later that day or the following day. (Please note that only USPS has direct access to the mailroom. Other carriers cannot leave packages in a secure area.)
2. The mail clerks sort the mail and place it in the appropriate mailbox.
3. All packages and items that do not fit in the mailboxes are logged and stored at the mailroom, at which time a package slip is placed in the appropriate mailbox notifying the student of its arrival.
4. After receiving a package slip, students should both the packaged slip and his/her Wildcard to retrieve their package.

How to Send Mail and Packages
- The mailroom does not accept packages to be shipped out or returned. Please contact the carrier directly to arrange for a pickup when you are available. Only packages under one (1) pound being shipped through USPS may be sent out. Anything over a pound must be taken directly to a US Post Office counter due to security measures.
- Regular mail may be slipped through the mail slot marked "US Mail." Campus mail should be handed to the mail clerk. The mailroom does not sell stamps; Norris has both a scale and stamps.
- There are two USPS locations in Evanston:
Evanston Main Office
1101 Davis Street (a few blocks west from the Davis El stop)
Evanston, IL 60201
Smaller Branch
1929 Central Street
Evanston, IL 60201
- Please ask all friends and family to correctly label any mail and packages in the following format:
Joe Student
Allison Hall, room 1234
1820 Chicago Ave
Evanston, IL 60201
- All mail with zip code 60208 or "Northwestern University" will first be delivered to the campus mail center before arriving at the mailroom. To ensure faster service, please be sure to correctly update your address for any bills or statements.

If I have moved, what happens with my mail?
You will receive your mail in the timeliest manner by updating your address directly with the respective companies/senders. The Housing Office provides the residence hall mailrooms with forwarding cards to update addresses. However, please check with the mailroom to ensure that your information is updated. We forward mail by checking forwarding cards and the campus directory or ph system. Please update your ph information if it is incorrect; this is especially important if you have moved off-campus.

If I have graduated, what happens with my mail?
Once again, please update your address directly with the respective companies/senders. Mail is forwarded if an address is located in the campus directory or ph system. Otherwise mail is returned to the sender.

Can I leave a package to be picked up in the mailroom?
If you are leaving a package for another student in that residence hall, then yes, please give it to the mail clerk on duty.
If you are leaving a package to be picked up or returned to an outside sender, then no, the mailrooms do not accept packages to be sent out. Please contact the carrier directly to arrange for a pickup when you are available in your room.

The mailroom is not open when it issupposed to be.
If a note is notposted, please email the Mailroom Manager with the date and time. Sometimes, a mail clerk must miss a shift for unexpected reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

There is a piece of mail in my mailbox that is not mine.
Please drop it off with the mail clerk on duty or slip it in the outgoing mail slot. Although we try to be as accurate as possible, we sort through many pieces of mail each day and mistakes may occur.

Something was sent to me overnight/Express mail. Why did I not get it?
Unfortunately, overnight/Express mail usually must be delivered in the morning when the mailrooms are generally not open. If you are not in your room, then the carrier does not leave the package. The carrier may try again later in the afternoon or the following day.

How do I apply to be a Mail Clerk?

I am interested in flyering all of the mailboxes on campus. How can I do this?
University Residential Life strongly discourages this method of advertising, as it is not effective, and recipients of bulk mailing either throw the advertisements away in the trash or on the floor outside of the mailrooms, at which point it is not fair to the housekeepers to clean them up. If you are interested in a limited bulk mailing, the best way to do this is to address each piece of mail to its intended recipient, bundle it in room order, and drop it in campus mail. All other bulk mailings not addressed to intended recipients must be approved 2 weeks in advance by the Mailroom Coordinator, and must be from a registered student group, be of appropriate content (not advertising any policy violations, for example), and have clearly designated contact information on the flyer itself.
