Northwestern Office of the Provost

Faculty Newsletter | October 2022

Dear faculty,

By this time next year, three of our schools will have new leaders. To support these searches, the Office of the Provost has created webpages for the Bienen School of Music dean search and the School of Education and Social Policy dean search, and we will establish a home for the McCormick School of Engineering dean search when we announce the search committee.

These transitions offer opportunities for faculty, staff, students and alumni to publicly or confidentially share their perspectives on goals and opportunities that can shape Northwestern for years to come. The Office of the Provost's Strategy and Policy team is deeply engaged in supporting these international searches to ensure we select deans who share Northwestern's values and who possess the visionary leadership necessary to advance our collective excellence.

Northwestern thrives on collaboration and interdisciplinary scholarship, which elevates the importance of these searches across the University's schools and units. As faculty, you possess the most important voices in dean searches. Many of you will be directly engaged in the dean search processes as critical members of a search committee, participants in a listening session or respondents to a survey. Even faculty who reside in schools that aren't undergoing a leadership transition are encouraged to share your input by emailing the search committees.

With your partnership and participation, I look forward to finding the very best deans for Northwestern's future.

Thank you,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor

Test proctoring for students in Isolation Housing

Students who are required to move into on-campus Isolation Housing during the Fall Quarter now have the option of taking proctored, in-person exams during their stay, with the approval of their instructors. Most students living in on-campus housing are in the first or second year of their undergraduate studies, so this option primarily applies to first-year and sophomore students. Details of the process are listed on the Undergraduate Advising website, and questions may be directed to undergradeducation@northwestern.edu.

Contemplative Care for Racial Justice Educators: Tending to the Body, Heart, and Mind

Processing the visceral content and reverberating implications of Northwestern's common read, "How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning of Slavery Across America," can be challenging on psychosomatic levels. Instructors who are teaching "How the Word is Passed" or similar identity-focused topics are invited to to engage in contemplative, mind-body practices and to explore trauma-informed pedagogical perspectives that can restore bandwidth and empower learning. Contemplative Care for Racial Justice Educators: Tending to the Body, Heart, and Mind will take place from 3-4:30 p.m. Nov. 2. Register online. Sponsored by the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, this event will be facilitated by Associate Director of Inclusive Learning Communities Veronica Womack and Senior Director Jennifer Keys.

More than a Cup series

When is a game more than a game? And when is a World Cup more than a World Cup? Northwestern will explore those questions through More Than a Cup: Outside the Touchlines of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, an academic series that will address the intersection of sports and society from the perspectives of gender, race, human rights and sports journalism. Organized by the Office of the Provost in partnership with units from around the University, this series features a range of international experts, including scholars from Northwestern's campuses in Evanston and Qatar, host of this year's World Cup. The series will culminate Nov. 21 with a viewing party on the Evanston campus for the United States' opening game against Wales.
