This is not an exhaustive list of things you may wish to pack as you come to Northwestern, but it will get you started with the basic necessities.
Extra-long twin bed sheets, pillow, pillowcases, comforter, etc. Shower sandals Shower caddy
Toiletries Adhesive bandages  

USB Flash Drive
("Thumb Drive")

Cell phone charger Clock radio or alarm clock
Headphones Nonhalogen desk lamp or other bright light for reading Power strip electrical adapter
Laundry bag or hamper, detergent, stain treater, etc. Laundry drying rack Iron
Money for laundry (Students prefer to put money on their WildCARD to do laundry, but quarters will work as well) Adhesive for posters, adhesive hooks, etc. Dry-erase board, markers
Raincoat, umbrella Portable fan* Photo ID (driver's license, state ID card, passport) **


*Would you and your roommate(s) mind sharing one? Be sure to discuss it before you arrive on campus.

**Remember if you plan to work on or off campus, you will need a Social Security card or US Passport.

Items prohibited from student rooms

Microwave ovens (including microwave/fridge combo units) Coffeemakers Halogen lamps
Ironing boards Any appliances for cooking or heating food and/or beverages Refrigerators larger than three cubic feet
Lighted candles, incense, or holiday lights Hanging blankets or fishnets Any device used to "loft" a bed
Pets Waterbeds Air conditioning units
Explosives, incendiary materials, firearms, martial arts equipment, or weapons of any description, for any purpose
