The Chinese Placement Test must be taken online by August 1.
Before registering for a Chinese course at Northwestern, you must take the online Chinese placement test if:
- You are a freshmen who has taken high school Chinese for two years or more, and plans to fulfill a language requirement, or would like to continue with the study of Chinese
- You are a transfer student who plans to continue the study of Chinese
The online Chinese placement test is not required if:
- You have no prior knowledge of Chinese
For these students: To start your Chinese study, register for CHINESE 111-1, offered in fall quarter only.
- You can speak the language, but cannot read or write
For these students: To start your Chinese study, register for CHINESE 115-1, offered in fall quarter only.
If you score high enough, when you check your results on the test site, you will be notified the time and place for taking the validation test. It will determine whether you have satisfied the Weinberg foreign language requirement and qualify for 200- or 300-level Chinese courses.
You may use the simplified character or the traditional character format on the placement test as you wish. For the written validation test, you may use either simplified or traditional version or a combination of both.
