Mission

Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), founded in 2004, was created to promote the interests and celebrate the cultural diversity of the Northwestern University community. Through ongoing collaborative programming with the campus and external constituencies and provision of services focused on leadership, learning, understanding, and inclusive excellence, MSA is dedicated to enhancing the academic, social, cultural, and personal development of students. MSA is also committed to facilitating multicultural development and to challenging students to participate in a more pluralistic learning environment in order to become more responsible and thoughtful global citizens.

The primary commitment of MSA is to serve students and is implemented through a variety of programs, services, and strategic planning activities that are designed within the framework of the University’s Highest Order of Excellence II:

  • Act as a primary resource for all students to have an impact as a cultural community at Northwestern.
  • Foster an environment where learning is embedded in academic, social, and cultural programming.
  • Collaborate with academic and University departments in designing initiatives that contribute to understanding the value of diversity.

Program Goals

To carry out its mission, MSA has six program goals:

  • Design and implement student learning initiatives that enable students to develop multicultural competence and knowledge.
  • Research and design a comprehensive assessment vehicle that will assess campus climate and cultural awareness.
  • Work with affiliated student groups and organizations to facilitate cross-cultural interactions and initiatives in support of student learning.
  • Enhance the social climate for the development of males of color.
  • Create strong university, alumni, and external collaborations that will be in alignment with and support of the academic mission.
  • Increase technological capability within MSA facilities that will enable greater student use and increase overall satisfaction.

Structure

Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) is comprised of three departments: African American Student Affairs, Asian/Asian American Student Affairs, and Hispanic/Latino Student Affairs. MSA is a unit within the Division of Student Affairs.
