‘We Will’ Campaign off to a strong start

Northwestern alumni, parents and friends have shown tremendous support for the University since the March 14 announcement of We Will. The Campaign for Northwestern.

More than 92,000 supporters have contributed over $1.63 billion to the University as part of the Campaign so far. Northwestern seeks to raise a total of $3.75 billion, with 141,000 donors participating in the Campaign.

The We Will Campaign is a University-wide, multiyear effort to raise the funds necessary to realize the bold ambitions set forth in the University’s strategic plan, “Northwestern Will.” Building on the University’s strengths and strategic areas of focus, the Campaign will support initiatives across all of Northwestern’s schools, as well as Northwestern Medicine and a range of other University programs.

The Campaign is an invitation to join together as a community, one that never settles for anything less than the very best — in teaching and research, arts and athletics, innovation and social justice, and much more.

All gifts, in any amount that is meaningful to you, have a tremendous collective impact on Northwestern. Please make your gift — not just once, but every year of the Campaign — at wewill.northwestern.edu.

A PIVOTAL MOMENT

University Trustee Adam Karr ’93, the Campaign’s co-chair for participation, emphasized the need for all alumni to support Northwestern during a Campaign celebration in New York City in June.

“This is a pivotal moment,” Karr said. “We can help craft a brilliant future for this University. We need to lead the charge.”

Late-night TV star Stephen Colbert ’86, ’11 H made a surprise appearance at the New York event, poking fun at Northwestern while echoing Karr’s call for support from all alumni in his own unique way.

“Your donation helps the University be a better place for students and faculty alike,” Colbert told a crowd of about 350 Northwestern alumni and friends. “It is so important to give not just this year … but please, give in the future, and if you can afford it, please give in the past.”

Colbert, who graduated from the School of Communication in 1986 and received an honorary degree from the University in 2011, also struck a serious note during his speech, reflecting on how Northwestern’s theater program helped shape his life and career.

“I would like you to join me in supporting the ‘We Will’ Campaign because it helps support what I think is the greatest university in the United States,” he said. “It made an enormous difference in my life.”
