Off-Campus

The student is a member of two communities— Northwestern University and Evanston. Therefore, it is important to be familiar with one's rights and responsibilities as a student and as an Evanston resident.

In addition to being held accountable for their behavior on-campus, students are also subject to disciplinary action for violations that occur at a University activity, program, function, or sponsored event; in the off campus residence of any University student or on any street or area contiguous thereto; or on premises subject to jurisdiction of University police whether on or off university property: http://www.northwestern.edu/handbook/city_juris_web.pdf

Adjudicating Violations of University Rules Off-Campus

The Office of Judicial Affairs becomes aware of incidents that occur off campus either through a police report, an Evanston resident/neighbor, or another student. Students will meet with a staff member from the Division of Student Affairs to tell his/her side of the story or be referred directly to the University Hearing and Appeals System or the Sexual Assault Hearing and Appeals System. If the student is found to be “not in violation”, then the complaint is dismissed. If the student is found “in violation” then sanctions will be assigned accordingly and the incident is noted in the student’s disciplinary file.

Sanctions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Verbal Warning
  • Written Warning
  • Restitution
  • Loss of Privileges
  • Educational Programs
  • Housing Probation
  • Disciplinary Probation
  • Suspension
  • Exclusion
