What is the application deadline?

May 1st is the application deadline. Apartments are assigned through a lottery. Applications received after May 1 will be put on a wait list. Please note that Kellogg is primarily for Kellogg students.

Can I choose my roommate? How is housing assigned?

You may request a roommate on your application, but this request must be mutual. Roommate requests will not be accepted after assignments have been made.

When can I move in?

How close is the building located to campus?

McManus is located just a few blocks from the Jacobs Center- about a 7 minute walk. See walking directions. For more information on getting around, please visit the Northwestern Transportation Services website

What is included in a furnished apartment? Are kitchen and bath accessories included?

A bed, desk, chest of drawers, bookshelf, arm chair and nightstand are included in bedrooms of all furnished apartments. One and two bedroom apartments also include living room furniture such as a couch and chair, and a dining table with chairs. Although the units are furnished, each resident is responsible for providing kitchen and bath accessories, clocks, televisions, microwaves, etc.

Although we may refer to monthly rental rates for comparison purposes, rent is billed on a quarterly basis. The fall quarter is billed for three and a half months (Sept. 1 - Dec. 16), the winter and spring quarters three months (Dec. 16 - March 16 and March 16 - June 16), and the summer quarter two and a half months (June 16 - Aug. 31).

What is included in the rent? Do I get a meal plan? Are utilities included? If so, which utilities?

All utilities (heat, electric, cable television) are included in the rent. You would only receive additional charges for any use of the optional land-line phone service. Because all apartments in Graduate Housing come with fully equipped kitchens, no meal plan is included in the housing charges; however you may purchase a meal plan if you would like. When will I get my room deposit back?

Your room deposit will be credited to your student account during the month in which you arrive.

Is there public transportation located nearby?

Yes. Both the CTA (the "el" train and buses) and the Metra train have stops at Davis Street, just a few blocks west of McManus. For more information, visit the Northwestern Transportation Services website

I own a car. What kinds of parking options are available to me?

An underground parking garage is available to residents of McManus. Underground parking plans run concurrent with a residents housing contract. The application form for underground parking will be e-mailed to you along with your assignment information. Parking spaces are allocated through a lottery, with preference given to second-year students. For information on underground parking fees, visit McManus Rates. Can I get out of my contract early?

Under certain circumstances a student may be released from the residence contract during an academic quarter. The reasons are as follows:

  • Academic dismissal
  • Disciplinary exclusion from the University
  • Change of family status (may also allow transfer to 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom if available)
  • Induction into military service
  • Health reasons, upon written recommendation of the University Student Health Service.

A student must apply for such release in writing, and in all cases written documentation substantiating the request must be provided to the Graduate Housing Office from the appropriate agency or office. Does McManus close over holiday and summer breaks?

No. McManus is a University-owned and administered apartment building - not a dormitory - and therefore does not shut down over summer and holiday breaks. You are free to be stay in the building for the duration of your housing contract.
