Sheil Center (Roman Catholic)
Fr. Ken Simpson and Mary Deeley
2110 Orrington Avenue
847-328-4648

Fr. Ken Simpson has been Chaplain and Director of the Sheil Center since 1992. He has been in ministry to college students since 1982. He is a native of the Chicagland area and a Priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Previous to coming to Northwestern his work with students focused on spiritual development and discernment. He holds degrees from Loyola University, the University of St. Mary of the Lake, and the University of San Francisco.

In addition to his work with students of all ages, Fr. Ken has served in a variety of parish settings and in college administration. He has also assisted emergency workers with emotional and spiritual issues for more than 25 years, including his current work as chaplain to the Evanston Fire Department. When not at Sheil, you can often find Fr. Ken in the stands or on the sidelines at NU sporting events and at other campus activities including plays and concerts. Fr. Ken is happy to work with students in a variety of contexts including retreats, classes, discussions, pastoral counseling and spiritual direction.

Mary Deeley earned a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School and Ph.D. in Hebrew Scripture and Early Christian Literature from Northwestern University in the Joint Program for Religious and Theological Studies. Mary began her association with Sheil as a graduate student and serves now as the Pastoral Associate. Prior to working at Sheil, Mary put her degrees in ministry and scripture to good use as a campus minister and college professor of Old Testament and Hebrew. Mary's experience in liturgy, music, counseling, and spiritual direction provides an excellent background for her work at Sheil. In addition, Mary brings her expertise in scripture to Sheil's Bible Study programs and to the many conversations about faith within the Sheil community.

When Mary isn't at Sheil, you can find her teaching courses at Seabury Western Seminary at Northwestern or for the Archdiocese of Chicago Lay Formation Program. She is also frequently at the Evanston ice rink where her daughters skate. Mary's husband, Dr. Daniel Lum, can often be seen (and heard) singing in the 9:30 choir.
