Communications & Engagement

Northwestern sustainability-related programs will succeed only if the University community is consistently informed and engaged. As such, Northwestern will weave sustainability into the campus culture, encouraging greater awareness of the environmental impact of actions and the adoption of more sustainable practices.

Goals

  • Northwestern’s goal is to engage Northwestern and broader external communities, with a focus on communicating and collaborating on sustainability commitments.

Actions in Progress

    Publish annual sustainability reports that track the University’s progress against stated goals to ensure accountability and transparency.

    Collaborate with undergraduate and graduate student organizations in Strategic Sustainability Plan implementation.

    Collaborate across departments, units, and staff affinity groups to establish partnerships for greater reach and visibility.

    Increase engagement in the Green Labs and Green Office certification programs.

Engaging Faulty and Staff

In 2021 sustainNU launched a sustainability training module for Northwestern’s new employee orientation, giving insight into how individuals can incorporate sustainability into their workplace. The module covers energy, waste, and water reduction best practices. As of spring 2022, more than 900 employees had participated in the training.
