Extending Your Study Abroad Term

Northwestern encourages students to study abroad for the full year and if you would like to extend your stay, you may be able to do so but must receive Northwestern's approval by the following deadlines. Keep in mind that it typically takes 1-2 weeks to secure approval and plan accordingly.

To extend a Fall program through Winter/Spring: December 1

To extend a Fall/Winter program through Spring: March 1

Complete the steps below to request approval:

1. Contact your program.

Determine if it is possible to extend your stay, including applicable deadlines and paperwork.

2. Email your Study Abroad Adviser. 

Explain why you would like to extend your term abroad. Your adviser will give you a deadline to complete the following steps. If you don’t know who your adviser is, review our Staff Profiles.

3. Email Krista Bethel, Manager of Study Abroad Financial Services, for billing and financial aid information.

Krista (krista@northwestern.edu) can discuss how extending your term might affect your billing and your aid package for the remainder of the year.

4. Email your WCAS major/minor adviser for approval, if applicable.

This step is only necessary for students who have any officially declared majors or minors in Weinberg. Send the major/minor adviser(s) an email indicating:

  • Your interest in extending your term of study abroad
  • The courses you are currently taking and plan to take next term

He or she need to confirm that your study abroad plans will work well with your major/minor. If your adviser approves, he or she must email your Study Abroad Adviser stating this approval. More information for your academic adviser(s) can be found in the Faculty/Advisers section.

5. Email your School Representative for approval.

Indicate:

  • Your interest in extending your term of study abroad
  • The courses you are currently taking and plan to take next term

He or she need to confirm that your study abroad plans will work well with your overall degree program. If your adviser approves, he or she must email your Study Abroad Adviser stating this approval. More information for your academic adviser(s) can be found in the Faculty/Advisers section.

6. Review the University Registration Requirement (URR) Policy to determine if/how your extension would affect your URR.

7. GeoBlue Global Health Insurance:  Your Study Abroad Adviser will provide you with details regarding updating your GeoBlue policy if it is not provided by your program.

You will receive further instructions from your Study Abroad Adviser after you have been approved to extend your stay.
