Dear colleagues,
As you know, the important work we do in the Office of the Provost is rooted in Northwestern's guiding principles and institutional priorities. Earlier this fall, the 11 priorities were amplified through a series of new webpages. If you haven't had a chance to peruse these pages, I highly recommend doing so.
Recently, the Office of the Provost also updated its Strategic Priorities webpage. Any time you need a refresher on how our work fits in with the University's broader values and priorities, I encourage you to refer to this page. I am confident that grounding our work in stated priorities and being able to articulate them will serve us all well, especially as the University undergoes its 10-year review for reaffirmation of accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission this academic year.
I want to close this note with one of our strategic priorities: "Continue to develop the capacity of the Office of the Provost to serve as a strong resource for the work of the faculty, students and staff." The Office of the Provost's strength depends on our people, and as I have often said, we are fortunate to have the best! As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I am thankful for your outstanding work and wish you a pleasant break.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hagerty Provost First Chicago Professor of Finance |

Meet Kamaria Porter
Kamaria Porter joined Northwestern as Associate Ombudsperson in July 2024. In the Office of the Ombudsperson, she provides a place for people from all parts of the University to have confidential conversations about conflicts related to policies, procedures and interpersonal strains. "This involves compassionate listening, referring people to resources and walking through policy documents," Porter says. "I also get the privilege of leading workshops across academic departments and administrative units, which offers me an expansive look at what is happening across campus." Porter previously served as an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at Penn State University.
Where did you grow up, and what were your interests as a child?
I grew up in Chicago, on the South Side. I always had a book in my hand, even at summer camp. I learned to play golf alongside my late father. I was also involved in community service and volunteered at LaRabida Children’s Hospital, bringing cheer and company to kids recovering there.
What was your path to higher education and what do you enjoy about it?
I have a bachelor's degree in history, with a concentration in U.S. labor history, an MEd in higher education and student affairs, and a PhD in higher education. Higher education institutions are fundamentally learning organizations, places of experimentation, discovery and communal learning. My interest has always been in working to translate that spirit of collaboration, openness and curiosity about the world into the daily interactions and operations within the institution.
What is something fun or interesting about you that people may not know?
I’m in a very competitive karaoke league and host trivia nights.
