Faculty Newsletter | April 2024

Dear faculty,

As an academic community, we are in the unique position of being able to address local and global issues while also learning from our peers. A current speaker series, “Israel & Palestine: Joint Speaker Series Exploring Fundamental History,” reinforces this potential and offers an opportunity for those seeking better understanding of the actors, geography and contested narratives in the region.

Jointly sponsored by the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the Middle East and North Africa Studies Program, and the Crown Family Center for Jewish and Israel Studies, the series seeks to unpack the complex history from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. The sessions, which started April 4 and will continue through May 29, feature renowned scholars from the U.S. and abroad from a wide range of personal and academic backgrounds. For session dates, descriptions and scholar bios, visit the speaker series events page. The talks also will be recorded and made available online.

These thoughtfully curated events are a testament to the importance of sharing scholarship across disciplines in the face of global challenges, and I want to thank the faculty and staff who were involved in creating this series with our entire community in mind.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
Provost and Professor

News and notes

TEACHx 2024

Bringing together instructors, students, learning designers and technology specialists, the annual TEACHx conference, which this year will be held May 15-16, showcases innovative approaches to teaching and learning with technology. This year's keynote speaker is Susan D. Blum, author of "Schoolishness: Alienated Education and the Quest for Authentic and Joyful Learning." Registration is open.

Offerings from Searle Center

  • Reimagining Assessment Practicum (RAP) is a three-week online program designed for instructors of all levels to learn more about and reflect on assessment and grading practices. It draws on expertise and experience from faculty and staff around the University. Registration is open and sessions run through April 26. Register for the whole practicum or individual sessions here. Download the spring schedule.
  • On May 3, Searle will host a Sparkshop on Strengths-Based Strategies for Neurodiverse Students, a 30-minute virtual presentation offering evidence-driven teaching strategies to support neurodivergent student success at a broad level, breaking down barriers and building in choice to empower students to utilize and develop their own academic strengths.
  • Searle has published a new teaching and learning guide called “Making Large Classes Feel Smaller” that provides evidence-based approaches to course design, classroom activities and assessment practices for large-enrollment classes.

Updates from the Office of Global Safety and Security

  • The U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory for Israel is a Level 3: Reconsider Travel. Northwestern’s evacuation and assistance provider now requires faculty and staff to complete a pre-travel disclosure form for Israel. See the Office of Global Safety and Security’s Evacuation page for more information.
  • If you are organizing or leading a non-GLO summer trip abroad involving students, graduate or undergraduate, start your planning with this Checklist for Group Travel Abroad. Group trips are defined as three or more students participating in the same general itinerary, and often, but not always, led by a Northwestern faculty or staff member. For any questions, email OGSS’s office account. OGSS also provides resources for units, schools and departments that support independent travel abroad, such as research. Solo travelers (graduate and undergraduate) are required to self-register in the International Travel Registry.

Guest Lecturer: James Lang

Award-winning author and former professor James Lang will host two workshops on April 16. In the morning, “Writing Like a Teacher: Expanding the Audience for Your Writing” will focus on how faculty can draw upon their hard-won wisdom to create effective learning experiences for a wider audience; participants will learn about the power of questions to drive writing projects, the use of evidence in public writing, and the importance of developing a unique writing voice. Later the same day, Lang will present a framework for the use of AI in the design of college courses and assessments in his talk "Policy to Pedagogy: Evaluating Artificial Intelligence for Teachers and Learners."

Mentoring Training Program for STEM faculty

The Office of the Provost, The Graduate School and the Center for Leadership are offering the Faculty Mentoring Training Program to all STEM faculty. The National Institutes of Health and Northwestern strongly suggest that faculty appointed to T32 and other training grants participate, but STEM faculty not appointed to training grants are welcome. The four-module program can be completed over two years. The remaining module in the 2023-2024 series is:

  • Session IV: Cultivating Ethical Behavior and Assessing Understanding, May 6, 1-3 p.m., Lurie Medical Research Center, Gray Seminar Room, Chicago. Register online.

Sessions will be offered again in the 2024-2025 academic year; dates will be announced beginning in Summer 2024.

Media Training 101

This workshop will help new faculty with little or no media experience and all those who feel intimidated by interviews with journalists. You will learn the basics (when, why, how) of working with the media. The hybrid session will be offered May 9, 1-2:30 p.m., in person at Baldwin Auditorium (303 E. Superior St., Chicago) and remotely via Zoom. Register online.

Faculty Leaders Series

This series is designed specifically for department chairs, division chiefs and faculty directors. The next session is “Civil Rights/Title IX Compliance” on May 8.
