RV Camping Throughout Time

pic1

My four data visualizations illustrate various aspects of RV camping in the National Parks over time. Since 1979, RV camping has been on a decline, but numbers are still in the millions.

Racial Disparities in Access to National Parks

pic8
National Parks can be challenging to visit. They're mostly in remote locations, far from cities and public transit. This makes them expensive to access, especially if you live farther away. This data visualization shows that National Parks are generally located closer to areas with a high White population but farther away from areas with a high Black population.

National Park Visualizer

pic5
We analyzed the U.S. National Park dataset provided to compare visit counts and trends throughout the years. Creating a visualization that is accessible and easy to comprehend was important to us because it lays the foundation needed to further explore relationships with factors like air quality, as well as other trends.

National Park Visits by Year

pic1
The visualization examines the trend of visits to the Top 5 All-Time most visited national parks by year. We notice that Great Smoky Mountain National Park was the only park to not have a major dip in visitors in 2020.

State-wise Post-COVID Change in Visitors to National Parks

pic6
This visualization describes the percent change in visitors the national parks from before (averaging 2015-2019 data) and after (2020 data) COVID data. This visualization aggregates data from multiple national parks in a single state. Unexpectedly, some states (MN, IN, OH, and VA) had an increase in visitors after the national epidemic.

National Park Economic Effects Map

pic4
What is the economic effect of COVID-19 on national parks and how have national parks recovered economically? My data visualization is a map that allows for users to use different measures to filter through all national parks before taking them to bar charts detailing differences between pre and post COVID-19 economic measures. Be sure to click on the ""About"" button on the top right to learn more about the features and important information regarding the map visualization!

When(ish) do people visit national parks?

pic7

When(ish) do people visit America's National Parks? Each line shows monthly visitation as a percentage of the peak month, where peak (100%) represents the month with the highest average recreation visits from 2020-2023. From Alaska's remote wilderness to the Virgin Islands' tropical beaches, these patterns reveal how and when people experience our National Parks throughout the year.
