Understanding the origins and history of antisemitism

Dear Northwestern Community,

It was a busy week. Bryan and Effi met with one of the committees for the Board of Trustees, who were in Evanston for their quarterly meetings. Erin Delaney, the chair the President’s Advisory Committee on Free Expression and Institutional Speech, was also at the meeting. It was a generative conversation and allowed Bryan and Effi to update the Board on the current momentum of the Committee.

Bryan and Effi quickly transitioned from this meeting to one with the Committee. We hosted two speakers to discuss both the historical expressions and origins of antisemitism and the ways that it currently manifests:

  • Peter Hayes, Northwestern Professor Emeritus of History and German, and the Theodore Zev Weiss Holocaust Educational Foundation Professor of Holocaust Studies, and
  • Menachem Rosencraft, Adjunct Professor of Law at Cornell School of Law

Both were generous with their time and expertise, and a spirited conversation followed.

The working group on evaluation also met to advance the efforts in building a meaningful and thoughtful survey instrument.

We have a very busy week ahead of us.

Thank for your kind notes and for your curiosity about our work.

Warmly,

Bryan and Effi (on behalf of the Committee)
