Information Regarding the Notice of Election

Earlier today, you received an email from Northwestern with a Notice of Election issued by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

This Notice of Election includes important information for all voters in the upcoming election that will determine if a labor union, the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America (UE), will represent Postdoctoral Scholars and Research Associates at Northwestern for the purposes of collective bargaining.

You received this notice because you are permitted to vote in this election. If you are an NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow, you may vote in the election, but your ballot will be challenged because the eligibility of NRSA Postdoctoral Fellows has not been resolved. The eligibility and/or inclusion of NRSA Postdoctoral Fellows will be resolved, if necessary, following the election.

Please note the following information regarding when voting will take place:

DATES: Monday, Aug. 25, 2025 and Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2025

Locations

Mudd Library – Classroom 2124
2233 Tech Drive, Evanston, Illinois 60208
10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Lurie Medical Research Center, Room 1-165 – Gray Seminar Room
303 E. Superior Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611
10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Voting will take place in person. There is no mail ballot option.

Your polling location has been assigned based on your primary campus work location (either Chicago or Evanston). If you vote at the wrong location, your ballot will be “challenged,” which could result in it not being counted. These voting locations also are listed by school/center in the Election Details section of Northwestern’s postdoctoral unionization website.

Please keep in mind that the outcome of the election will be determined by a majority of votes actually cast. Not voting means that others will decide the important question of unionization for you, and you will be bound by this decision whether or not you vote. We urge you to review available information from Northwestern’s postdoctoral unionization website, UE and other sources, and to vote so that your voice is heard.

The NLRB will tally the votes on Aug. 27. Regardless of the outcome of this upcoming election, Northwestern remains committed to supporting and preparing our Postdoctoral Scholars and Research Associates for successful careers.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Hagerty
