 | Honors | Marshall Scholar will study energy technology | When she graduated from Northwestern in spring, Claire Petersen set her sights on the University of Cambridge in England, which boasts a cutting-edge master’s program in energy technology.
Now she’s preparing to study carbon management as a Marshall Scholar. She will arrive in the UK next fall just in time for the COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

 | Honors | Two new Schwarzman Scholars headed to Beijing | Courtney Zhu of Medill and Sophie Jiang of the School of Communication have been named to the 2021–22 cohort of Schwarzman Scholars. Next year, they each will pursue a master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing. | |

 | Space | A magnetar is born | Long ago and far across the universe, an enormous burst of gamma rays unleashed more energy in a half-second than the sun will produce over its entire 10-billion-year lifetime.
After examining the incredibly bright burst with optical, X-ray, near-infrared and radio wavelengths, a Northwestern-led astrophysics team believes it potentially spotted the birth of a magnetar. | |

 | Arts | An alum’s journey in music | Kevin Vondrak sang pop songs as an undergrad, enrolled at Northwestern, connected with Donald Nally and went on to work with the biggest names in contemporary choral music. Recently he talked about his new arrangement of “Alma Mater” and what it took to break out of a creative funk during the pandemic.
