Members of the John Evans Club plan to beat the heat this summer by attending Pop-sical: A Musi-cool Revue, a Music Theatre revue celebrating popular tunes from the last 30 years, at the Ethel M. Barber Theater on July 25. In addition to their May tradition of attending the Waa-Mu Show, members also gathered at the McCormick Tribune Center at the end of April for the annual Minow Lecture in Communications, this year featuring Jonathan Alter, senior editor and columnist of Newsweek magazine and Minow Visiting Professor in Communications.

Members of LANU (Latino Alumni of Northwestern University) enjoyed an evening of fun and Latin cooking in March when they packed the test kitchen in the home of chef Geno Bahena of Chicago’s Ixcapuzalco and Chilpancingo restaurants. Bahena, formerly of the Frontera Grill, prepared a variety of his favorite dishes and shared recipes for such delicacies as shrimp seviche with roasted cactus and duck breasts in green pumpkinseed molé.

NUGALA (Northwestern University Gay and Lesbian Alumni) hosted a Northwestern Night at the Theatre at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art last March. Participants discussed the play I Am My Own Wife with Eric Rosen (GC93, 99), artistic director of About Face Theatre, which staged the show, and producer Heather Schmucker (C99). In April, following a performance by comedian Margaret Cho, members gathered at Scott Hall Guild Lounge and raised $6,000 for scholarships and student events.

In January and March the Northwestern University Entertainment Alliance–West hosted “The Big Lie,” a two-part discussion featuring a panel of entertainment professionals who addressed ethics in Hollywood. Hayley Sumner (C86), who manages screenwriters, was among those who spoke on the deception that many feel permeates the entertainment industry. Also on the club’s spring schedule were an Oscar party at the Hollywood home of Michael Blum (C83) and a Dillo Day at the Beach cleanup and barbecue.

The N Club, the association of varsity letter winners in athletics, elected new officers who will begin their terms in July. Mark Massery (SESP74, GSESP75) succeeds Todd Somers (WCAS73) as president. Matt Rice (WCAS97), Roger Williams (WCAS94) and Robin Voigt (WCAS77) will serve as vice president, secretary and treasurer, respectively. The club inducted honorary members Jean Yale (SESP57) and Tadaaki Hatta (G68) for their support of Northwestern athletics at the induction/senior recognition banquet in May.

Chicago-area alumni of Men Off Campus, a group of local male students that was active from 1947 through the 1970s, still meet quarterly at the Prime Minister Restaurant in Northbrook, Ill. The MOCs will next gather at 7 p.m. on June 11 to plan for a major reunion, slated for June 2004. For more information contact Mel Long (EB50) at 815-363-0441.
