Continued Support for Vital Research

Dear members of the Northwestern community,

More than five months ago, the University, with the support of the Board of Trustees, committed to sustaining critical research after federal actions froze a significant portion of our federal research funding. At the most recent Board meeting, we reaffirmed that commitment. Despite the freeze, we will continue to meet the essential funding needs of our faculty researchers at least through the end of the calendar year.

We continue to urge fiscal responsibility, including the conservative use of funds to help minimize University risk and extend the time that Northwestern can support our research community.

Research is central to Northwestern’s mission of advancing knowledge for the greater good, and the discoveries made by our scholars contribute to life-saving innovations every day.

As we invest in protecting Northwestern’s research enterprise, we remain steadfast in our efforts to regain access to the federal funding that was promised to our investigators. We are working diligently to support the faculty, postdocs, staff and students whose creativity and expertise fuel Northwestern’s impact on the world.

These efforts are grounded in core principles we share as an intellectual community: the preservation of academic freedom and the independent operation of our University. These values are essential to our ability to pursue truth and address the world’s most complex challenges.

We are deeply grateful for your continued dedication and resilience as we move forward together in this important work.
