This Week’s Tragic Events in Georgia
Dear members of the Northwestern community,
For some time now, but in particular, since the earliest days of the current pandemic, we have been witnessing an increase in hostility and acts of violence in this nation against Asians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Northwestern recently condemned these incidents of xenophobia and bigotry, and we do so again in the wake of the shocking and reprehensible killing of eight people this week in Atlanta, six of Asian descent. We stand by Northwestern’s own Asian and AAPI community at this time of mourning.
Our world remains in a precarious state; each new day seemingly brings new variations on age-old expressions of intolerance and hatred. Yet we resolve to continue working toward building a society in which all people, from all backgrounds, are protected and valued. This, we know, is simply fundamental to our mission as a university. May we not tire of this work, and may we continue to look after one another during a fraught time.
